Naturallyisis Showcase

For the past thirty years, Isis Brantley, a natural hair stylist, educator, and founder of Sisters of Isis natural hair product line, has been a pioneer for The Natural Hair Movement. Brantley led the fight for Braiding Freedom and Economic Liberty for natural hair stylist against the state of Texas. In 1997, Brantley was arrested for braiding hair without a license. At the time of her arrest, no Texas law required hair braiders to hold a license. Isis Brantley was targeted by the state of Texas because of her reputation for teaching homeless and low-income women the ancient art of Ancestral Braiding.

Brantley was not intimidated by the state’s unlawful action, and she was determined to fight and defend the rights of natural hair stylist. Brantley fought back against the state of Texas for her right to earn a living, to have the ability to teach other women how to earn a living, to have the ability to teach other women how to earn a living, and to protect her civil rights. In 2007, after countless meetings and conversations with state officials, Isis Brantley was ‘grandfathered’ in as a natural hair care licensee by the sate of Texas. Earlier this year, after a twenty year battle with Texas, Gov Greg Abbott signed into law House Bill 2717, which exempts hair braiders from having to acquire a cosmetology license to operate within the state.

Empathetic Media

Empathetic Media

After graduating the university of Missouri in 2014, Dan Archer felt like sometimes viewers of the news didn’t quiet comprehend the news stories, to what effect the words used should actually have on them, no empathy for the story. in 2015 he founded the virtual reality media company called Empathetic Media, taking news telling to new immersive heights. They created a way for people to experience the event first hand via virtually reality in order to instill exciting new empathy to the story. 2016 was a big step towards the development of virtually reality in terms of concept and application, as time goes on we see more and more technology advancing towards virtually reality in order to provide a more submersible experience for its users. News media companies such as the Washington Post, Magnum Foundation, Associated Press and Fusion are already catching on and using such interactive means to present their news.

Hillary’s New Home

Throughout Hillary’s busy campaign she managed to find time to shell out 1.16$ million for an additional house to extend there already grandiose home in Chappaqua. As Bill Clinton was leaving office and Hillary Clinton was running for senate in New York they decided best to purchase the cozy home. “According to property records, in late 1999 they paid $1.7 million for a lovely and nicely appointed but hardly lavish 1.1-acre property at the tail end of a sleepy Chappaqua cul-de-sac.” (Mark David, 2016) By acquiring the additional home, the Clinton’s now own the entire spread at the end of the road in the peaceful New York community. In addition the Clinton’s campaign did not immediately comment on the sale of the home. Not to entirely accuse the Clinton’s of foul play, for many ex-presidents become very successful after a presidency. But they also put former presidents in a negative light. Ex-presidents have been known for making millions by parlaying their White House experiences into speeches and books. And Bill Clinton himself has used these same opportunities to boost his income.

George w. Bush has also done the same thing. Since leaving office in 2009 he has made a multitude of paid appearances racking in millions of dollars. Hillary herself also boosted her income through book sales and speeches. These questionable actions may be the reason many didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton.Tax finding shows that they hauled in $139 million between 2007 and 2014. For billionaires they probably wouldn’t consider the home or their lifestyles all that lavish. But for many New Yorkers that purchase alone may have added negative attention to Hillary’s rocky image.

Brooklyn College’s Look-Alike Faculty

https://youtu.be/PWRrqX3HckQAs a student attending  Brooklyn College I’ve noticed that faculty doesn’t quite reflect the diverse student body. As i continued my research to fin out why  its quite clear the according to data CUNY  lacks a great deal when it comes to hiring faculty from minority groups.

Data from Fall 2013 shows that Brooklyn College employs a lower percentage of minority professors within the full-time and adjunct ranks than all but one other senior CUNY colleges in 2013. College officials, however, don’t deny that the data reflects problems that exist on campus, and many faculty members acknowledge a lack of diversity among their ranks. As they refer to classified staff what they mean is the positions  that allow people to instruct students. For example a professor’s aide who completes the task of a professor when absent. Although this position provides direct teaching opportunities with students, the standard education degree is not required.

Diversity is regarded as an important issue throughout higher education across the country, and at CUNY this also seems to be the case.

Over the past decade and a half, CUNY as a whole, along with individual CUNY campuses, have done a number of things aimed at addressing questions surrounding diversity. This has included the formation of the Office of the University Dean for Recruitment and Diversity, the creation of an annual faculty conference focusing on the themes of diversity and inclusion, and the creation of programs such as the Diversity Projects Development Fund and Faculty Fellowship Publications Program.

Summer to Fall

During Summer, college students gather in various places; sitting on the campus lawn, campus benches and the campus stairs. The weather is prime for outside activity such as movie night on campus or just for a breath of fresh while studying or doing assignments. Some might say all good things must come to an end however, for there comes the time after Summer, Fall. Where the leaves slowly start to fall off most branches and the temperature drops steadily. We break out our sweaters and light jackets in order to cope with the climate change while remaining as stylish as we can, but what does this mean in terms of fun? Most, if not all events that took place in summer are packing up or packed up and left for the year. The weather is too unpredictable for most events to even commence. The day can start off in the low 60’s but by mid day be high 70’s then rain all night. The weather forecast is barely ever accurate at this point of the year. So what does that mean for kids or college students?

Well first of all, as stated earlier, the first thing to change is wardrobe. Some kids are completely fine with the change, they in fact love to wear long sleeves, but other kids however dread the change cause they might have to take their Fall outfits out of storage which could be annoying or tedious at times. Then comes the issue of either overdressing, making the day hot and sweaty, or under-dressing, making the day cold and chilly, both which can lead to a weakened immune system making it extremely easy to pick up a cold which is why Fall is officially considered the Cold and Flu season.

It doesn’t take long after the temperature drops below 40, then winter rear its ugly head. It’s cold and being outside hurts. The best place for people to be is inside, which has it’s upsides and downsides. Such as being warm and comfortable, but because it’s so warm and comfy inside, it makes it hard to mentally and physically prepare oneself and actually to go outside. Which makes commuting slow on top of painful so more times then often, college students are late for classes and or work if they have a job. Having to wear multiple layers of clothing in order to keep at least a little bit warm while outside doing what they have to do. No events besides ice events or snow related events, making the amount of fun to be had extremely limited. The unmerciful cold doesn’t help the added stress college students get from their final exams, making winter the hardest part of the year for them. However the harshness of the cold makes it all worth it when everyone gets to graduate.

AIDS/HIV in New York

Health.ny.gov releases the statistics of aids after a two year period. Therefore  it won’t be until2016 where we will be able to see 2014 statistics on AIDS. According to the statistics shown below Brooklyn always runs second when it comes to the amount of individuals living with either HIV/AIDS.

On average, the total annual number of new HIV diagnoses in each of the past five years increases by about 330. Even with these higher numbers, the downward trajectory of new HIV diagnoses in NYS over time remains accurate.

  • Looking at the living cases by current age shows that HIV/AIDS should no longer be thought of as a young persons’ disease. While the majority of HIV diagnoses occur before age 40, 76 percent of persons living with diagnosed HIV infection are over age 40 and 46 percent are age 50 or older.
  • In New York State HIV disproportionately affects minority populations. The rates of new HIV diagnoses among Blacks and Hispanics are 6.9 and 4.8 times higher, respectively than the rate for Whites.

Can You Hear Us?

Brooklyn college has a  great radio station  and it is important that students tune in. Instead of having to go around campus in search of a bulletin board, students tuning in to Brooklyn college radio get to hear what’s happening on and around campus in real time. Be it an event that’s requesting a multitude of people to attend or part-take, it’s basically the campus news outlet. Not only does it produce the news on what’s going on or outside of campus, but they often cover controversies that appeal to a majority of students. Its been known for hosts of Brooklyn College to sometimes even score interviews with many A-list individuals. Brooklyn college radio is definitely a plus and should be taken advantage of so students are more aware on the community surrounding one self
